Who Is Anpanman?

ANPANMAN is  a popular Japanese character that originated from a storybook by Takashi Yanase dated way back in 1973. If you ask any kid in Japan about Anpanman, they will know who you are talking about!

Anpanman is a superhero who fights the main bad guy called Baikinman (baikin means germs or bacteria or mold) with his friends who are different types of pastries.

The name Anpanman literally means red bean paste filled pastry man. It was during the Second World War Mr. Yanase experienced starvation, and his dream was to eat anpan (which is the red bean paste filled pastry). And so it inspired him to create ANPAN-MAN, the superhero. You can buy anpan at convenience stores or local supermarkets – it’s pretty good! Who would have thought it would be so popular to this day. It now has manga, anime and several movies.
